Household recycling centres

What is a household recycling centre (HRC)?
It’s a place where you can take your surplus household items for recycling or disposal. The recycling centres complement your refuse and recycling collection and recycling bank services.
Shropshire Waste Partnership runs five household recycling centres at which you can recycle up to 20 different types of waste, including paper, cans, glass, plastic bottles, batteries, cardboard, electrical items and garden waste. There are also facilities for hazardous materials, small quantities of asbestos and non-recyclable waste.
Where are they?
The five household recycling centres are located at:
- Shrewsbury (Battlefield Enterprise Park)
- Oswestry (Maesbury Road)
- Bridgnorth (Barnsley Lane)
- Whitchurch (Waymills Civic Park)
- Craven Arms (Craven Arms Business Park, off Long Lane)
There is also an Amenity Skip and Recycling Centre at Coder Road, Ludlow.

A guide to the materials that can be recycled at the household recycling centres, and what happens to some of them, is now available. It's called 'What happens next?' and an electronic version is attached. Please contact us if you would like a hard copy.
Our household recycling centres Service Standards and Site Regulations are attached.
Notes
The centres are operated for the general public to recycle or dispose of their household waste free of charge
The household recycling centres do not accept any waste from any business, or any waste – including household waste - which has been carried for profit. It is illegal for this waste to be disposed of, or recycled, at a household recycling centre.
The household recycling centres cannot accept large amounts of soil and rubble. We also discourage the use of the sites for the disposal of mixed ‘black bag’ waste which has to be landfilled.
Entry permits
A permit is needed if you wish to take your household waste to any of the household recycling centres in a trailer or a commercial-type vehicle. Entry permits will be required at the Coder Road Amenity skip and recycling site from 1 December 2008. For more information and an application form, follow the entry permits link in the menu bar.
Shropshire Waste Partnership and its contractors reserve the right to refuse entry to the household recycling centres to large vehicles or trailers, or restrict their entry to specific times on the grounds of Health and Safety. Permits will not be issued for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Asbestos and household hazardous waste
Facilities for the acceptance of small quantities of household asbestos are provided at the household recycling centres. It is important that the necessary safety precautions are taken in the handling and transport of asbestos materials which can be hazardous. It is also essential that anyone wishing to dispose of this waste at a household recycling centre contact Shropshire Waste Partnership in advance, during office hours, by calling 0845 678 9009. Asbestos from any buildings used for commercial purposes, either currently or previously, will not be accepted.
Special facilities are also provided at the household recycling centres for the disposal of surplus hazardous materials such as domestic and garden chemicals, which should not be disposed of in general household waste. Please ensure that the contents of any containers are clearly marked and transport them carefully to avoid spillages. Please ask a site attendant where to put them at the site.
Agricultural waste - the new regulations
New agricultural waste regulations came into force on 15 May 2006. These regulations mean that farm tips/dumps should not be used, and plastic and other materials which can give rise to pollution and/or harm should not be burnt.
Waste from farms or any other businesses cannot be taken to a household recycling centre for recycling or disposal.
For more information about these regulations contact the Environment Agency's agricultural waste helpline 0845 603 3113, or follow the link to their website.
