School lunch to mark Chinese New Year

Children at Shropshire’s primary schools will be celebrating the start of Chinese year of the rat this Thursday (7 February) when a special Chinese lunch menu is served in schools across the county.

As well as marking Chinese New Year, the menu will offer children the chance to try foods which they may not eat very often, or that they have never tried before.

The menu offers crispy chicken wraps served with spring onion and cucumber in a sweet chilli sauce; chop suey rolls; or sausages in a sticky rib sauce, each served with noodles or steamed rice, mixed vegetables, carrots, sweetcorn and broccoli flowers.

Lemon and coconut Chinese cookies will also be available, along with a choice of either sweet or creamy rice pudding served with a banana and strawberry sauce.

Bill Campbell, Operations Manager with Shropshire County Council’s school meals service, said: “This menu was first served a year ago to mark the start of Chinese New Year and proved so popular with the children that we have decided to serve it again. Our school cooks are really looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year with their pupils.”
