This week marks International Day for Disabled People (Monday 3 December). If you live in Shropshire and have a disability there is a range of services that Shropshire County Council can offer, arrange or direct you to.
Services can range from providing an assessment of your needs to putting you in contact with relevant disability organisations and assistive technology providers.
Assistive technology can cover a very wide range of equipment from very simple ‘low-tech’ items such as calendar clocks to more ‘high-tech’ items, such as sensors that can detect accidents or emergencies in the home and can be monitored by a community alarm service, known as Telecare.
Other services available include the Disability Equality Scheme which gives people who have a disability, or represent people with disabilities, the opportunity to contribute to how services are run. The Community Directory on this website also provides useful contacts for support groups, and advice and information for people with a disability or for their carer.
Councillor Barbara Craig, Cabinet member for community services said: “Shropshire County Council work with partnership organisations to help improve the quality of life for disabled people. We are not only changing the lives of people but offering them the chance to give something back to the community by working with us to deliver excellent services for local residents.”
