End to 'no waiting' restrictions near new stadium

Shropshire County Council is to stop placing traffic cones and implementing temporary no waiting restrictions in the areas surrounding the new football stadium in Shrewsbury.

This decision, which will come into force from 31 December, has been made following increasing concern over the use of public funds to undertake this work.

The county council implemented these restrictions as a trial to maintain amenity for local residents, and to ensure that the opening of the new stadium went smoothly.

However, as time has progressed it has become clear that indiscriminate parking is an issue which needs to be addressed by Shrewsbury Town Football Club, as agreed in their Travel Plan.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment, said: “The temporary restrictions have been viewed by many residents and local councillors as successful. However, as these parking issues are not related to road safety or capacity, our resources should not continue to be used.

“As part of the planning process the club requires a current travel plan, which states their responsibility to control visitors parking in surrounding areas. We will continue to work with the club to encourage them to fulfil their responsibilities.”
