Proposals to sign quiet roads for cyclists near hospital

Shropshire County Council is looking to provide cycle direction signs to guide cyclists onto quiet roads which link to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The signing proposals, which are available for consultation until 15 February, form part of a larger project to improve facilities and encourage more cycling to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Shropshire Primary Care Trust offices on Mytton Oak Road.

The current proposals will direct cyclists onto quiet roads such as Kenwood Road, Crowmeole Drive and Falcons Way, providing an alternative to busier routes.

These will link with the existing cycle route network at Shelton Road, and there are proposals in the future to provide new cycle routes along Mytton Oak Road and links to Gains Park.

Isabel Gillis, Primary Care Trust’s director of public health, said: “We are very keen to encourage staff and visitors to cycle to work and have already worked with the County Council to provide covered cycle parking. The signing proposals are another step forward in promoting cycling in Shrewsbury, which we fully support.”

Jan Cook, Shropshire County Council’s senior transport planner, said: “By providing these safer and more pleasant routes we hope that it will encourage more people to cycle to work.”
