Frankton Canal Bridge will be closed for 12 days from Monday 7 January until Friday 18 January 2008 so that it can be repaired.
The bridge, which carries an unclassified road over the Shropshire Union Canal near Lower Frankton, was damaged by vehicular impact and several bricks have been loosened or damaged in the western parapet.
For this repair work to be carried out safely, the bridge will need to be closed for the duration of the works.
When the road is closed, traffic will be diverted between Welsh Frankton and Lower Frankton via Whittington, Queen’s Head and Rednal using the A495, the B5009 and an unclassified road.
Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available throughout.
John Williams, Shropshire County Council’s principal bridge engineer, said: “It is appreciated that the road closure will cause some inconvenience, however we hope that people will understand that these repairs are necessary for safety reasons”.
