Friday 8 August is set to be a busy day for weddings in Shropshire – with a large number of couples seemingly keen to tie the knot on the unique and apparently lucky date of 8/8/08.
So far, thirteen couples from across the county have booked civil weddings for that day with Shropshire County Council’s registration service – many more than on an average Friday.
According to Chinese culture, 8 is a lucky number that stands for prosperity and wealth, and 888 is thought to be particularly lucky. Indeed, the Summer Olympics in Beijing are scheduled to open on 8/8/08 at 8:08:08 pm.
Karen Burton, business service manager with Shropshire County Council’s registration service, said: “Friday 8 August is certainly proving to be a popular day for weddings in Shropshire, and our registrars will be much busier that day than on a typical Friday. I hope it will prove to be a happy and lucky day for all the couples who are due to get married, and that they do indeed enjoy prosperity and good fortune in their lives together.”
More than 50 premises across Shropshire have been granted a licence by Shropshire County Council to stage civil weddings and other civil ceremonies. The approved venues list now includes castles, stately homes, colleges and village halls.
