Work to start on new zebra crossing in Ludlow

Work to create a safer route to a Ludlow primary school will start on Monday 7 January.

Shropshire County Council is creating a new zebra crossing as part of its work with St Laurence CE Primary School on ‘Safer Routes to School’.

The crossing will be located on Lower Galdeford and will assist children, parents and staff walking to and from the school. The crossing will also benefit those residents in Ludlow who want to access to the town centre on foot from Sheet Road.

The construction work will be carried out under temporary traffic light control. It is anticipated that the work will take up to three weeks to complete, weather permitting.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “We are committed to providing safer walking and cycling routes to and from Shropshire’s schools and hope that this new crossing will boost the school’s already successful walking bus.”

Peter Corston, local County Councillor, added: “We welcome this much needed, safer crossing and we hope it will encourage more and more people to walk and cycle to the school."

Parents, pupils and staff at St Laurence Primary School have been involved in identifying ways to encourage more walking and cycling to school, and highlighted the problems of crossing Lower Galdeford.
